Talented Musicians Blog - Meet Andrew Sklar-Scream

An Interview with Andrew Sklar-Scream

Where do you currently reside?
I live on Long Island, however, I travel frequently into NYC for gigs and busking.

How many years have you been playing?
I've been singing my heart out since I was three and playing instruments since I was seven starting with violin and piano then moving onto guitar when I was 14.  Ukulele was somewhere in the middle and I just recently picked up mandolin and woodwinds in the last year.

What musicians influenced you?
My BIGGEST influences are Billy Joel and Ronnie James Dio.  I love Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Boston, .38 Special, Kansas, The Eagles, Bob Serger, Tina Turner, etc.  Anyone who rocks a stage.

How many bands have yu been in?
To date, I believe I've been in five bands: a progressive Funk band called S.P.I.(Self Proclaimed Idiots), an acoustic duo called Nunzilla, a classic rock plugged set called The Fuzz, and two metal bands Death's Cure and Exit Existence.

How often do you practice?
I practice every second.  I'm always singing melody lines or fingering tasty licks on my Taylor.  I try to get at LEAST an hour a day in on every instrument I own.

What’s it like to gig or tour?
Touring is an incredible experience.  It allows you to see places you otherwise would not and meet amazing new faces.  It has a very rockstar vibe to it.  The only downside I'd say is not being in one centralized location for too long.

Gigs are an incredible thing because most of the gigs I play consist of set lists of music I wrote or helped write.  It's a unique experience so get genuine reaction to something you've created.

Tell us about your gear?
I'm sporting an acoustic / electric Taylor Big Baby currently.  It has a very rich bright sound.  That's really my main gear.  Everything else isn't worth mentioning.

What advice would you give a newbie musician?
My only piece of advice to newbies: "NEVER stop creating.  Never stop living in the music.  It's dying out."

What was one of your accomplishments as a musician or what are your goals?
Two of my greatest accomplishments are opening with my band, Exit Existence, for a very prestigious heavy metal guitarist Devin Townsend on his DTP tour and getting a full spread picture on the front page in the Chicago times as the Narrator, Lonny Barnett, when I toured with the broadway musical Rock of Ages.
