An Interview with Tony Dente - Drummer
Hi, Tony how many years have you been playing?
I started playing the piano and singing at the age of eight. I've been playing the drums and singing for over 50 years.
What was your first set of drums?
It was a 1950's set of Ludwig Club Dates. They were an ugly black and gold duco finish that I absolutely hated. I wish I had them today because they're back in style and worth money.
Who were your influences?
There were so many drummers and other musicians that I admired but my dad was my biggest influence. He was a public school music teacher and encouraged me to listen to all types of music and not limit myself to one genre.
How many bands have you been in?
I've been in at least 15 bands throughout my playing career.
What's it like to gig?
I play because it's fun and I'm blessed to be able to make music with my friends. I've been very fortunate because of the guys I play with are not only hugely talented, they are also quality people with whom I enjoy spending time.
How often do you practice?
Believe it or not, I still practice every day on an old fashioned drum pad. I run through the rudiments to stay loose. I also learn new tunes for upcoming gigs the same way. A laptop, headphones, the pad and sticks and I'm off and running.
What was one of your accomplishments as a musician?
Developing a good singing voice both as a lead and backup vocalist is something I am most proud of. Because drummers are always behind the other musicians on stage, it's fun to see the expression on the faces of people in the audience when they can't figure out where the vocal is coming from. It has also made me a more musical drummer.
