An Interview with Erica Bryan
Hi Erica, where do you currently reside?
I live in Nashville, Tennessee.
What's it like to have a CD out and in your view the current state of the music industry for independent artists?
Putting out a CD is so fulfilling and the culmination of years of hard work. but it can be less exciting than you would think. As an independent artist, you are the only one promoting it, so if yu put it out with no plan for promotion, only a few people will take a listen and the music will just sit there without reaching new ears. It literally takes hours of planning each week to try and get some forward momentum with your album...and money helps too! I guess my short answer: awesome but still a lot of work and shameless plug: check out my debut EP "Jericho" https://itun.es/us/abTTcb
How do you promote yourself?
I promote myself through TV and radio performances, blogs, internet radio play and streaming platforms. Every Thursday I do a #TBT Cover Day on my Facebook page where I cover songs of the past. www.facebook.com/ericabryanmusic
How many years have you been playing?
I've been playing piano since I was eight years old. (I'm not telling you how many years ago that was) but I've been playing as an artist since 2012. That's not that long in the scheme of things, but I try to be a fast learner.
What musicians influenced you?
I love soulful and powerful current singers like NEEDTOBREATHE, Ray LaMontagne, Grace Potter, Elle King, Kelly Clarkson, Gavin Degraw ...
What's it like to gig or tour?
Gigging is definitely a lot of fun and always brings you a good story or two from when something went wrong! I will say that when you don't have roadies it can be a lot of work! You have to drive yourself, bring all your gear with you, set up the stage, soundcheck, play for 45 minutes, then tear down, drive back home - and do it again next weekend. Lately, I've been loving my acoustic set because I enjoy playing in an intimate experience (with less gear to tear down).
Tell us about your gear.
On stage, I'm always clad with my Breedlove acoustic guitar (it's so pretty),
a Silvertone electric guitar, a Casio keyboard, and Cordoba ukulele. My husband travels with his LP Cajon or Gretsch drum kit.
What advice would you give a newbie musician?
Be the one who believes in you the most. If you put your career hopes in the opinions of others, you'll be in for a rocky road. If you're the steady one with the drive and positivity, you'll coast over the rocky roads and hopefully find some smooth shores.
What was one of your accomplishments as a musician?
I was really proud that we were able to perform live on NBC this year. Here's a link to the performance if you weren't able to catch it live. http://www.wsmv.com/clip /12616853/erica-bryan-jericho- 72516
