Hi Karl, how many years have you been playing?
I've been playing since I was seven, but seriously from age 12 until today.
What musicians influenced you?
There's Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Narada, Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Jack DeJohnette, Mitch Mitchells, John Bonham, Stevie Wonder, Joe Zawinul, Dave Grohl, Steward Copeland, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Ringo Star and everyone else I hear.
How many bands have you been in?
I have played long term with a few artist including Unit 1 with Mark Egan, John Lee Quartet, Johannes Mossinger NY Quartet, Wolfgang Lackerschmid Connection, Ali Ryerson and Charlie Elgart. For the most part, I perform as a freelance drummer in live and recording situations, so that would encompass hundreds of different artists / bands.
What's it like to gig?
It is always a learning experience and usually very fulfilling.
How often do you practice?
Basically, every day at some level to maintain my basic skill set. When I am on a new project that I am learning, I often practice much more concentrated long practice sessions.
What advice can you give to a new musician out there?
Listen to as many musicians as you can, play with as many musicians as you can, and seek inspiration whenever, wherever you can from other musicians, teachers and anyone that is playing music that you are interested in. Be humble and open to new ideas and constructive criticism at all times so you can receive the inspiration you are seeking.
What was one of your accomplishments as a musician?
To be able to perform along side many of the legendary musicians that I admired and respected when I was learning my craft I was chosen this year to be one of six groups worldwide to perform at BMW World Headquarters in Munich, Germany at the BMW World Jazz Award 2016 alongside one of my heroes, Mark Egan.
I would like to share that I recently started subbing on "HAMILTON" on Broadway for the great Andres Forero.
