An Interview with Gary Weiss - Drummer
Hi Gary, how long have you been playing?
I've been playing for 42 years.
What advice can you give a newbie musician?
This biz is tough and you need to love what you're doing or it can really take a toll on you emotionally and physically. Try to be versatile. The more you know the more you'll work. Be on time. Be professional and nice.
Who were your influences?
They were Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy and Simon Phillips.
How many bands have you been in?
I freelance so I'm with many bands. The main ones are Dion, The Duprees, Total Soul, Full Disclosure and about 100 others, literally.
What's it like to gig?
It's awesome to gig. Gigs have allowed me to play venues such as Madison Square Garden, PNC Arts Center, Mohegan Sun Arena and the Izod Center. It's also brought me to many states, cruises and islands around the world that I would not have had the opportunity to visit normally.
How often do you practice?
I practice almost daily whether it's to better myself or to learn songs for upcoming jobs.
What's one of your accomplishments as a musician?
The biggest accomplishment is that I'm able to make a living and help support my family by doing what I love.
