An Interview with Rich Weiss
Hi Rich, how long have you been playing?
I've been playing guitar for 23 years and singing all my life.
What musicians influenced you?
Musicians who influenced me include Neil Diamond, Weird Al, The Beastie Boys, U2 and probably without thinking about it - Donna Summer.
How many bands have you been in?
I've been in four bands, all of which I was the leader of. Usually, it falls on the singer to be the leader of the band.
What's it like to gig?
Gigging with an excellent band that can tear a room up is one of the best feelings I can get, second only to sex. Knowing I have the power to move people to get up and dance is an incredible high.
How often do you practice?
I don't practice nearly as often as I used to. Now with my current band, the caliber of musicians I play with doesn't require rehearsal to often at all. Normally I just send a list of songs that we're going to play, everyone practices a little on their own and we just show up and play. 99% of the time it works out well so we're going to keep doing that for the most part.
What advice can you give to a newbie musician?
The advice I would give to a new musician is to keep playing. Practice your craft, get proficient, then find other people to play with. You don't truly improve until you start listening to other people, what they're doing and reacting to that in a way that's pleasing to listen to.
What's been one of your accomplishments as a musician?
The accomplishment I'm most proud of is my seven-song CD that I wrote, arranged and produced. I'm really happy with the way all the songs came out.
