Meet John Rango

An Interview with John Rango

Hi John, where do you currently reside?
I live in Mahwah, NJ

How many years have you been playing?
I first picked up the guitar when I moved to Bergen County, NJ in high school around 1991.

What musicians influenced you?
At first, true ol' fashioned thrash metal.  In my late teens, I was turned onto the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, and Jazz.  Then onto what we refer to as 3rd generation jam bands such as God Street Wine and Phish, also experimental bands like Stereolab.  I also have a love for ridiculous 80's music as well as obscure 60's and 70's music you don't hear much.

How many bands have you been in?
Several... I played in a semi-touring successful independent rock band, Echofission, for nearly 10 years.  My own band and my latest endeavor, Inside Riptide, featuring Mike Manuele and Vincent Livoisi.  Both are accomplished powerhouse musicians.  I also currently play with a great cover/original band "Jam Straight" based out of Dumont, NJ who are also fantastic musicians.

What's it like to gig or tour?
Playing live music is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.  I love everything about it.  Touring is tough now because of career, children, etc..., however, musicians always find a way to "make it work".

How often do you practice?
I try to pick up a guitar every day if not every other day.  I still have my routines I used when I was 15 years old to warm up and then dive into different things.

Tell us about your gear?
A guitarist is never satisfied with their gear.  I think it's a challenge and a form of mastery to really hone in on the sounds you are looking for.  I do truly believe it all begins with the technique of the player that makes the gear come to life.

What advice would you give a newbie musician?
The obligatory "practice every day" is a must.  Continue to love and foster it.  Music is a living birthing anomalous entity that doesn't belong to anyone.  Home it in and make it your own.

What was one of your accomplishments as a musician or what are your goals?
I've been afforded the opportunity to record 4 albums, have my music played nationally and internationally.  I've also had great opportunities to play with people I hold the highest regard for as musicians.  I have to say all the hard work I've put in has paid off  in a plethora of different avenues.  I've also met absolutely wonderful people along the way, and, I love people!
