An Interview with Ryan Flannery
Hi Ryan, where do you live?
I live in Dumont, NJ.
How many years have you been playing?
I've been playing for 12 years.
What musicians influenced you?
I'm very influenced by bands like Guns N' Roses, Alice in Chains, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Papa Roach, and Alter Brid
How many bands have you been in?
I've been in two bands: my old high school band, Project Erie, and my current band, Strive. Playing live is probably my favorite thing to do ever. It gives me a sense of purpose and accomplishment and it's very rewarding.
What’s it like to gig or tour?
Touring is tough. It's great to see new places and play to different crowds every night, but it's really hard to eat healthy and there's always that chance that your van or trailer will break down in some way which as you can imagine isn't very fun.
How often do you practice?
I practice almost every day, including twice a week with my band for at least three hours a day.
Tell us about your gear?
Right now I play two Gibson Les Pauls. One is a black and gold 1999 classic and the other is a white and black 2016 studio. My amp is a Peavey Valve King and I run it through a 440-watt B-52 cabinet. My main pedals are a Boss Delay and Flanger, Dunlop Crybaby Wah, Electroharmonix Pitch Pork, and a Korg Pitch Black Tuner.
What advice would you give a newbie musician?
I would tell newbie musicians to make sure you have a firm grasp on social media and promotion, and if you don't, make sure you get someone to do it for you.
What is one of your musical accomplishments?
One of my biggest accomplishments was playing at Nassau Coliseum in front of 10,000 people and most recently my band was selected to play this year's NJ Rock Carnival at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. with bands like Halestorm and The Used. My goal is to have a platinum record and tour the world. I'd be okay with a gold record first!!
