Talented Musicians - Jane Slimermeyer Riley

An Interview with Jane Slimermeyer Riley

Hi Jane, how long have you been playing the drums?
I have been playing for over 40 years.

What musicians influenced you?
My influences have been John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Buddy Rich and Carter Beauford but there are so many other amazing drummers that have influenced me in some way throughout my lifetime.

How many bands have you played in?
I've been in so many bands starting in High School through today.  Each band experience has shaped my appreciation of the art of music and musicianship.

What's it like to gig?
I love to gig.  It is the ultimate culmination of all of your hard work, dedication and passion for music and a way to share it and connect with others.

How often do you practice?
I try to practice every day, even if it's only for a short time.  I have two kids, a husband and a full-time job so sometimes it's hard to find a lot of free time.  Lately, I spend most practice time learning new material for upcoming gigs, which is a process I love, especially if it is music that is unfamiliar to me.

What advice can you give to a new musician out there?
Always follow your dreams!  You can do anything you are passionate about with hard work and dedication . . . and practice as much as you can.

What was one of your accomplishments as a musician?
Recently I was featured as a drummer in a commercial for my local hospital where I have been treated for my cancer for the past six years.  If somehow my story of fighting metastatic disease while pursuing my musical passion can raise awareness and give hope to others that would be my life's most honored accomplishment.
