An Interview with Andy Davis - Drummer
Hi Andy, where do you live?
I live in Lincoln Park, NJ
How long have you been playing drums?
I've been playing since I was about ten. It's been 20 years.
Who were your influences?
Influences for me musically are Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Ray Charles, The Allman Brothers and Earth, Wind and Fire. On the drum side of influence are Stanley Randolph, Gerald Heyward Jr., Tony Royster Jr. Bernard Purdie and Steve Gadd.
How many bands have you been in?
I've been in 12 bands, still in three as we speak.
Do you like gigging?
Gigging is my favorite. Some people like the studio but I'm a live guy all the way! I don't know if there is anything more fun than being on stage and connecting with an audience! It's always been my favorite part of music: the energy and emotion just make us feel a certain way. Music is the most powerful drug on the planet!
Tell me about your gear?
Gear - well I'm very happy to be able to say that I have a few companies that have my back. I play a four piece all white Spaun Drum Co. Custom Kit. Sizes are 10", 12", 16" and 20". The cymbals are made by Amedia Cymbal Co. They are designed and hammered in Turkey. Kickport International is also a huge help when it comes to sound! For sticks, I tend to go with Vater 5A's. Pedals and stands are DW.
What advice would you give a newbie musician?
Advice: I would let them know to push hard, practice every day, and enjoy every moment of it. Music is supposed to be fun. If you want it bad enough and work hard enough you can accomplish anything you like. Be respectful, on time, and have good gear and the possibilities are endless.
What is one of your accomplishments as a musician?
It's being able to play and get hired by so many great musicians across the country. I think longevity in the music business and to be able to make a living doing what I love is the ultimate goal!!!!!
