Meet John Boyd

An Interview with John Boyd

Hi John, where do you live?
I live in Tampa Florida.  I was born and raised here as well.

How many years have you been playing?
I've been playing for 20 years but with bands for the past 8 years.

What musicians influenced you?
Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Mike Starr, Rob Trujillo, and David Ellefson

How many bands have you been in?
Archangel, Eastland Rage, Sins of the Father, 45 Auto, Life's Less Dead, and M.A.D.

What's it like to gig?
Gigging is awesome, nothing is better than seeing the crowd enjoying what you have created.

How often do you practice?
As a band we rehearse once a week, but individually I always have a bass handy and ready to play when something inspires me.

Tell us about your gear.
My primary bass is an ESP F414 neck through in black cherry red.  My back up is a Sterling SUB4.  Both are played through a Harte HA3500 head with a BBE Sonic maximizer out of a Peavey tvx410 cab.

What advice would you give a newbie musician?
Don't wait for the band fairy to come along and declare you ready to be in a band, get in one even if it has to be with other amateurs.  The learning process of that is invaluable and you will have some memorable experiences along the way.  Not only that , but your foot is in the door as they say.

What was one of your accomplishments as a musician and what are your goals?
Getting to open for Overkill at the Ritz Theatre in Ybor was my most memorable show so far.  Packed house, amazing sound and the guys in the band we're really cool.

My goals are to get to tour and possibly to travel over seas playing shows.  I wouldn't mind playing a large festival to experience that.  Ultimately I want to have a hell of a story to tell on my death bed.
